Gastronomy

Food (at least at noon) is treated by hard-working Milanese more as an unpleasant duty than a pleasure, and the center is dominated by paninotece and fast food bars. However, there are also a large number of good restaurants here., and even though they are generally more expensive, than elsewhere in Italy, often you can pay below 20 OOOL for a full dinner.

Fairs and supermarkets

On the daily (except Sundays) in different parts of the city street markets you can buy cheese cheaply, Sausage, fruit and all other food items you need. A comprehensive list of trade fairs is provided in the "Mercati" column of the Corriere della Sera daily. Of the supermarkets, the most in the center of the city are the Standa, Via Torino 37 i na Piazza Castello, and Esselung, Viale Piave 38 (near Porta Venezia).

Sandwiches, fast food bars and self-service establishments

Brakes, Via del Duca 5. Good self service restaurant. An excellent selection of salads and warm dishes prepared on site.

Cellar, Via Santa Maria Segreta 6. Great sandwiches and house wine.

China Express, Piazza Beccaria 4 (•705015). A self-service Chinese fast food restaurant in the city center.

Ciao. A network of good, inexpensive bars: on Via Dante, na rogu Via Meravigli, Corso Europa 12, Corso Buenos Aires i Via Fabio Filzi (near the Stazione Centrale).

Italy & Italy. Another chain of bars. Dobre spaghetti, pizza and sparkling wine. Long Carrobio, Corso Buenos Aires 7 i Corso Venezia 7.

The only one, Via Palermo 20. Varied sandwiches and salads. The clientele is mostly young.

Union dairy, Via Unione 6, near the Church of San Satiro on Via Torino (only at noon). Good for vegetarians.

Loaf, Via Bergamini 7, near Universita Statale. Full of students. Inexpensive meals and sandwiches.

Restaurants and pizzerias

Abele, Via Temperenza 5. Warm, ale zadymiona atmosfera. He specializes in rizottas. Only open in the evenings. Closed. Pn. MMI Pasteur.

Artists, Corso di Porta Ticinese 16. Near the colonnade of San Lorenzo. Popular with workers. Crowded in the evenings. Trams #8, # 15 and # 19. Closed. Nd.

The bruschetta, Piazza Beccaria 12. Always full, so you have to wait a long time for a table. Good location, good pizza, low prices… and free bruschetta (rusks served with tomatoes, garlic and olive oil). MM 1 San Babila lub Cathedral.

From Franco, Via Donatello 5. A tiny trattoria. Liked by students of the nearby faculty of architecture. Fish always on the menu. Last orders by 21.30. MM2 Piola lub Loreto. Closed. Sb. i nd.

From Maria, Via Grubicy de Dragon, róg Viale Montello. Solid, traditional cuisine, on the edge of an expensive shopping area. You can meet the fashionable, wealthy clients. MM2 Moscow. Closed. Sb. evening and sun.

Mergellina, Via Molino delle Armi 48. Average pizza, but the prices can't be beat. Tram # 15, bus # 96 or # 97. Closed. wt. and Wed. at noon.

Garage, Viale Monza 140. Near the former headquarters of the socialist party, still known as the socialist trattoria. Good, spicy dishes, great atmosphere, but it can be crowded. MMI Turro. Only open in the evenings. Closed. Pn.

Osteria Strippoli, Via Boccaccio 15. Self-service trattoria near Santa Maria delle Grazie. Specializes in appetizers so plentiful, that they themselves can be the main dishes. Good grilled meat and sausage. Famous for its Apul wines. MMI Concilazione or Cadorna. Closed. Nd.

Pasta e Fagioli, Via Venini 54. As the name suggests, specializes in flour dishes and beans. It is also worth trying scamorza (mozzarella toasted to softness on the fire). MM Loreto. Closed. Wed.

Pattaya, Via Murtori 10. Good, inexpensive Thai cuisine. Ordinary, nice atmosphere. Trams #29 and #30.

From Rino Vecchia Napoli, Via Chevez 4. From the center, but it's worth coming. A few years ago, she won the European pizza competition. Moderate prices, a huge selection. Tram #33 or a bus # 56.

Swallow, Via Spartaco 2. Also far away, but the chef of one of the most famous restaurants in the city works here. Both traditional dishes, and more innovative. Better to show up earlier. Bus # 84. Closed. Nd.

Stella d’Oro, Via Vonizetti 3. It has the status of an institution in Milan. Affordable prices. Bus # 60 or # 62. Closed. Sb.

Hungarian, Largo La Foppa 5. Home Hungarian cuisine. The interior is small and simple. It is not cheap. MM2 Moscow. Closed. Nd.

Veneta, Corso di Porta Romana 103. Nice place. He specializes in Venetian cuisine, especially Fegato alla Veneziana (Thin slices of liver and onion boiled in olive oil). Trams #13, #29 and #30. Closed. Nd.

Cafes and bars

In addition to the traditional cafes in the Vittorio Emanuele gallery, there are many super trendy night coffee shops in Navigli and Ticinese, and in Brera a number of establishments slightly more elegant than them. Regardless of the character, however, they are all rather expensive. Many of them also run a kitchen, and some are open during the day, and at night.

Bar Magenta, Via Carducci 13. Decor in the style of the twenties. Very trendy, often crowded. You can eat a sandwich here for lunch, as well as having a late night drink.

The Biscuit, Via Ascanio Sforza. Crammed with large groups of hippies playing guitars.

Camparino, Piazza Duomo 21. Probably the oldest bar in Milan. This is where Campari was invented. High prices even by Milan standards.

Chimera Magazine Cafe-Book, Via Cicco Simonetta 11. Cafe and bookstore. Semi-homosexual clientele. Occasional exhibitions and concerts. Open only on weekdays.

Osteria del Pallone, Via Gorizia, corner of Alzaio Naviglio Granda. In a tasteful interior, vodka and ice cream are served. Twenty years ago, this is what all Milanese osterie looked like..

Pois, Colonne di San Lorenzo. Once the most fashionable bar in Milan. The clientele consists mainly of poser students.

Portnoy Cafó, Via De Amicis, corner Corso di Porta Ticinese. The only café in Milan, in which poetry evenings are held.

Racana Pub, Via Sannio 18 (•589027). The manager is British. English cuisine and beer. Outside the center. Bus # 90 or #91.

Resentin Caffe, Via Mercato 24. Thirty five types of grappa vodka and a great selection of wines. Plus coffee and newspapers and magazines to browse through.
