One whole, a day spent in Genoa would not be enough to visit dozens of restaurants, from simple trattorias to elegant 19th-century cafes. The cheapest are near the port and are only open at noon. In the evening, however, one gets an impression, that the nightlife is not particularly rich here. The Genoese like to spend their evenings at home, and if they already leave, it's usually for theater or opera. However, there are some small bars and music clubs here, and during the academic year there are also small film clubs. In summer, it's best to go to one of Albaro's seaside cafes.

Gastronomy

The best known Ligurian specialty is pesto. They are made from basil, pine nuts, olive oil and parmesan cheese and used as a sauce for flour dishes or mixed with a thick minestrone vegetable soup. Another local delicacy is torta pasqualina, spinach casserole, cheese and eggs, very often sold as a bar dish. Piazza Caricamento, on the other hand, is known for its good fried sea food to take away. Moreover, the whole Old Town is full of shops selling a kind of pancakes with peas, called farinata. Peas are also found everywhere in Liguria, but rare elsewhere, chickpea soup. More nutritious dishes, e.g.. steak with salad, serves Caffe Royal in Via di Macelli di Soziglia, and in the student restaurant on Via Balbi 15r you can get appetizing panini.

They serve the best and cheapest dinners in the Old Town. A well known restaurant, where it is worth trying local dishes, is Sa Pesta, Via Giustiniani 16r (close. sb. evening and sun; it closes early and you have to be ahead 19.30). Corona di Ferro is only open at noon, Vico Inferiore del Ferro 11 (This street leads to Via di Macelli di Soziglia) with the company menu too 15000 L, oraz Trattoria Luciano and Mimma, Course M. Quadrio 4 (at the edge of the port), where for 9000 L you can eat a three course meal, and in high season, a fave appetizer is served with the aperitif (broad bean, which you have to choose for yourself). Nearby, przy Climb Santa Maria di Castello, it houses the inexpensive Puci dei Trilli (close. Wed. evening), and just down the road from the Stazione Principe is the Florida Trattoria-Pizzeria.

Trattoria Lombarda, in Via San Bernardo, specializes in Sardinian dishes and wine and is usually full (a meal costs approx. 20000 L per person). Genio has a good reputation for Ligurian delicacies, Ascent San Leonardo 61 (close. Nd.; reservation indicated; • 546463). A wonderful lunch of sea food (including razor clam with a characteristically elongated shape), homemade flour dishes and pudding cost here 30000 L per person. The restaurant is reached by taking Via Fieschi into Piazza Dante, and then take the first stairs on the left (Ascent San Leonardo). In the vicinity of the Stazione Principe, and Via San Carlo, there is also a very good chinese restaurant, Hong Kong Trattoria.

Numerous bars are located amidst strip clubs and brothels, on the coast line, quite unpleasant Via Gramsci. Somewhat quieter places can be found in the streets off Via XX Settembre. He is nice, for example, located near Piazza Dante on Via Ceccardi AUTnsieme, a bliżej Brignole Cin-Cin Station in Via Cesarea i American Bar in Via Maragliano. For those thirsty for English beer, just off Via San Lorenzo, and Vico Casana, is home to the Brittania Pub. It is open all day, but it only comes to life in the evening, when, in addition to local Italians, foreigners living in Genoa come here .

There are also a number of music clubs and cafes in the city. At the end of Via Balbi (nieopodal Principe Station; you have to go up the stairs near Farmacia Pescetto to the small square of Piazza Santa Brigida) hidden is pleasant, though a smoky club and Panteca Volante bar, where bands almost always play in the evenings. "Alternative" Psycho Club, Carmagnola ladder 7, it is located near Piazza Ferrari (3rd left left going up Via XXV Aprile). In a former church on Via Mądre di Dio, near the expressway, it houses the Centro Sociale Occupato Autogestita art center (access via stairs and narrow passages down from Piazza di Sarzano).

In this center you can listen to jazz and reggae on most Fridays and Saturdays. Jazz evenings take place on Thursdays at the Louisiana Jazz Club, Matteotti Square 20 (w Doge's Palace), and bluegrass bands perform on Mondays at The Patio, Via Oberdan 22, in Nervi (See. below).

Culture

Local journals, II Century XIX i The Agenda, distributed free of charge at AAST and EPT offices, have current chronicles of cultural events. Genoa's two main theaters, Teatro Duse i Teatro Politeama, are located on Via Martin Piaggio and Via Bacigalupo respectively.

Major British and American bands usually perform at the Teatro Yerdi, na Piazza Oriani w Sestri Ponente (frequent train and bus connections; information on posters). The Genoese Opera is housed in the Teatro Margherita, Via XX Settembre 16a, but it also hosts ballet performances and classical music concerts (details in local press).

The student monthly La Rosa Purpurea del Cairo publishes the current concert program, shows and movies. During the academic year, it can be obtained from Via Terralba 4 / r (east of Piazza Verdi, you have to go Via Tolemaide and Corso Aldo).
